Repentigny permit

Cutting tree permit. City of Repentigny

Trees are essential to our lives in many ways. It is therefore important to protect them while ensuring the quality of life of citizens. This is why any tree cutting deserves to be supervised in order to avoid abuses and to keep things in perspective. Municipal by-laws exist for this purpose.

This page provides information concerning tree cutting on the territory of the City of Repentigny, and this, as an indication. It is very important to refer to the zoning by-law or to the City of Repentigny for official and up-to-date information.

Permit to cut down a tree

Felling of an ash tree by Emondage Repentigny in the City of Repentigny.
On its website, the City of Repentigny recommends that you ensure that any tree near a street is actually located on your property before considering its removal. Otherwise, it is up to the City of Repentigny to decide whether or not to intervene.

As soon as the trunk of a tree has a diameter of 0.20 metres (8 inches), measured at 1.3 metres (4 feet 3 inches) from the ground, a permit must be obtained in order to cut it down.

Photographs of the trees that will be retained and those that will be removed (i.e. a close-up photo showing the problem and a photo of the entire tree) must accompany your application.

A tree cutting permit is usually free and issued within 5 business days.

On the "Demander un permis" (Request a Permit) page of the City of Repentigny website, you will find a link to a tree cutting permit application form, which you can complete online.

Acceptable reasons for cutting down a tree

A dead or diseased tree that is destined to die, or that is beyond recovery, or that is too close to the foundation of a building, or that impedes the growth of a fellow tree, or that presents a danger to the safety of persons, all constitute justified reasons for cutting down the plant concerned.

Other acceptable reasons include a tree that has been damaged by weather events, is structurally compromised, interferes with construction projects that cannot be located elsewhere on the property, or interferes with public works.

An ash tree may also be removed in certain situations. However, the operation must not take place between March 15 and October 1. The disposal of residue is also regulated. On-site chipping is required for wood residue less than 20 cm (8 inches) in size; beyond that, it must be transported to an authorized site within 15 days of felling. Other possibilities or constraints exist. Keep yourself informed.

There are also special provisions for felling; for example, felling is prohibited on slopes in areas prone to landslides. Again, caution is advised and it is important to have an up-to-date copy of the bylaws.

Unpleasant situations, no matter how frustrating, are not usually acceptable reasons. For example, if a tree is too close to your shed, or if you are tired of picking up its heavy leaves in the fall, or if roots are causing your flagstones to lift, you should not be able to obtain a permit for these reasons. Trees are essential to us as human beings in many ways, we are obligated to do everything we can to keep them as healthy and as long as possible.

Finally, felling may be permitted if after the plant has been cut down the land still contains the minimum number of trees then required. This number varies depending on the size of the lot. It is therefore important to consult the by-law in this regard. Moreover, in order to respect this minimum quantity, any felling may require the replacement of the felled specimen within six months of obtaining the permit. Certain species are prohibited. The replacement tree must have a diameter of at least 5 cm measured at one metre from the ground and it must measure two metres in the case of a deciduous tree and 1.25 cm if it is a conifer.
